Irrigation Meter

Irrigation Meter
Irrigation meters are a great benefit to Byron Township customers. They provide an accurate measurement of outdoor water use and reduce sewer bills during sprinkling months. By installing a second meter, sanitary sewer charges will only apply to indoor water use. With this savings, it is estimated that you will recoup your initial investment over a 3-year period.
We strongly encourage builders and customers to install an irrigation meter before starting a new lawn and landscaping. You could recoup the meter cost within the first year.

The cost to purchase an irrigation meter is $855.00. We do not require a licensed plumber to install the meter as long as the plumbing meets the Byron-Gaines Utility requirements. If you do hire a plumber, be sure to get more than one estimate.

Process to Purchase an Irrigation Meter

  • Fill out a permit application at the Water and Sewer Department, 8085 Byron Center Ave. Purchase an irrigation permit and meter for $775.00. You will receive a spacer bar and a copy of the irrigation permit.
  • If you or a friend will be installing the plumbing, a plumbing permit will need to be purchased for $80.00 at the Byron Township Inspection Department.
  • If you hire a plumber, make sure they purchase a plumbing permit at the Byron Township Inspection Department.
  • Once the spacer bar is installed on your irrigation line in accordance with Byron-Gaines Utility Authority diagram, call 616-971-0002 to schedule your meter install. A BGUA worker will come out and remove the spacer bar, then set your irrigation meter and do what is necessary for the meter reader to read it from the outside of your home.
  • After the meter is installed, you or the plumber will need to call the Byron Township Inspection Department at 616-878-9155 to set up the final plumbing inspection.
